Field campaign 2024

Excavations at the Muti Muti site in the Lebombo Mountains near the border with Mozambique have continued and last year’s excavation reached bedrock. More than 2,000 individual finds, consisting of a few ceramic remains from the Early Farming Communities as well as stone artefacts dating to the Middle Stone Age  and the Later Stone Age, were unearthed. The fieldwork was completed a few days before the end of the campaign and the international team was able to complete the processing of the more than 2,000 artefacts and bring them to the National Museum of Eswatini for secure storage. Furthermore, potential sites were located during a helicopter flight. After doing some research and visiting sites, we located a new excavation site for our field campaign in 2025.
